Philipp Plein Remains Fashion’s Undisputed Master of Cringe

Philipp Plein, who’s essentially two tiny finance bros stacked in an ill-fitting suit, won’t stop doing what he does best: putting sequins on things and posting about his gaudy mansion, “Chateau Falconview,” on the official Philipp Plein Instagram.

The 43-year-old just debuted his Pre-Fall 2022 womenswear collection comprised of bedazzled dresses fit for Bat Mitzvah season in Orlando, leopard print-lined puffers, and, for some reason, jeggings.

The entirely ridiculous collection also introduced Plein’s first costume jewelry line, a series of faux gold chains that would make Coco Chanel — the godmother of costume jewelry — faint.

Speaking of people that Plein’s latest would offend, it seems the German designer looked to Daniel Lee to inspire a handbag that’s essentially a cross between Bottega Veneta’s Cassette purse and Chain Pouch.

Other highlights from Pre-Fall 2022: a maxi dress with cut-outs at the thigh and calf (Plein sure knows how to flatter a woman’s body!), outerwear and shoppers scribbled with Basquiat-esque illustrations, and faux fur coats stamped with Plein’s nom de guerre: PP.

In an interview with WWD, Plein said the season aimed to “have items that people actually can wear,” suited to “real women, not only on Instagram models or 20-year-old influencers.”

Has the awokening finally come for Plein, who once body-shamed a journalist over a negative review?

The crown jewel of the chat, though, is the designer’s eloquent summary of the Philipp Plein customer: “Our woman either goes to the gym and hangs out with her friends at home or goes to parties.”

Reasonable!

In the interview, Plein reveals his plans to open a hotel, club, and restaurant in Milan while simultaneously launching homeware and children’s wear — so gird your loins for a “Plein-tiful” 2022.
